I’m Ella Beck, a singer-songwriter and producer, and I describe my style as “electronic chamber art pop”.

Musically, I draw inspiration from Kate Bush, Agnes Obel, Depeche Mode and Mine. 

Living out the dream of a solo career as a late bloomer in the second half of my life – why not, actually?! The stereotype of wrinkle-free, instant success that’s so common in this business simply doesn’t apply to everyone. Especially not to female artists who choose to start a family. There are still far too few women of my age represented on stage and in the media, and when they are, it’s often accompanied by comments about their age and how ‘well they’ve kept themselves’ , which can very quickly turn into ‘she shouldn’t be showing herself like that anymore’. That’s why I want to encourage all people identified as female in the cultural sector to pursue their own dreams and never think that it might be too late. Let’s make ourselves visible and ensure that we’re judged on our talent, regardless of our age!

When I was six years old, I first consciously witnessed my oldest brother spending night after night between Christmas and New Year making mixtapes from the radio, and I shared his excitement as we waited to see if he’d manage to press the record button at just the right moment. That’s how I was brought up on the late folk, glam rock and funk tracks, and the early days of new wave and electro-pop from the 1980s. For me, there was nothing bigger, nothing cooler, nothing more grown-up than creating my own soundtrack! From that moment on, I knew that music would always be the linchpin of my life, and you never saw me again without a catchy tune or a song on my lips.

Then came the pandemic, a major turning point that brought large parts of the cultural sector to a standstill and briefly silenced my songs and catchy tunes too. My 45 concerts a year suddenly dwindled to three; my choirs and students went from around 90 people a week to zero; and not a single one of the four planned workshops took place. The effort involved in switching to online formats was immense – and in the end, it was hardly worth it. Out of this complete standstill, sounds, beats, lyrics and melodies that had probably been slumbering underground for a long time gradually began to rise to the surface. I poured all my energy into writing and arranging my first songs, produced entirely by myself from start to finish. I was actually surprised myself at how much joy I got from getting to grips with electronic music production, sampling, building beats, creating sounds and, in the end, standing on stage alone with my songs. The feeling of drawing on my full creative and vocal potential, and being able to express myself so personally – that sense of self-efficacy was, and still is, pure happiness for me.

I’m now planning to release my first EP in spring 2027 and would like to expand the reach of my live performances. I’d also like to appear on the radio and on television, of course, and tell the world my story – namely, that dreams have no expiry date, and that even well into your 40s, you still have a voice and a story to tell. I don’t want to hide away and become invisible just because I’m getting older; instead, I want to celebrate my experience and my life! When, if not now?!
